When I wrote to the Cherokee nation West web site on the internet, to inquire about Stephen's name, this is the reply I recieved from Paul Fore:
Hello Angela,
According to my best memory "Ootse-lu-nu-he" or thereabouts. Another
rendition of the same word is "Oo-nah-lu-nah-heh" which is a reference to the
Son of God, in other words, The Savior, Jesus Christ. I came across the word
several years ago while reading a book "Reminiscences Of The Indians" by a
Baptist preacher who lived among the Cherokees around 1810 or so. I don't
remember his name. He studied the old religion of the Cherokees and deduced
that the Cherokees were a Christianic people anciently having known the name
of Jesus Christ, in their language, centuries before the whites arrived. His
short book was quite interesting. Your Stephen Spears must have been a man of
uncommon spiritual stature to have borne that name. Wa-do,
-----Ah-leh-yo-he-wah-----
