When I was around 3, we lived at the foot of Flood Mountain in Yell County, Arkansas. For people familiar with this area, we were about a mile away from Blue Hole, and the creek ran behind our house. My Mom was going to business school in Russellville at the time, and she would stay up late at night, working on her assignments and trying to learn 10 key. My Dad was a chicken catcher, and always gone at night. I remember going to sleep every night to the sound of Mom running the 10 key machine at the kitchen table, and light from the kitchen illuminated my room fairly well. Since it was summertime, we slept with the windows open, and at that time we didn’t have screens.
One night Mom sent me to bed, and I laid there listening to her work on her machine, still wide awake. I kept smelling something really bad coming thru the window, and I tried a few times to tell her, but she wasn’t smelling anything and thought it was my way of staying up. After the 3rd or 4th time I complained, she told me basically… one more sound outta me… and I’d spend the rest of the night nursing a sore tail end. I was 3... The threat of a sore hiney shut me right up! But man, it just REEKED outside! Finally Mom smelled it too and came in to investigate. She decided it must be a hog farm or chicken house being cleaned out, and told me to shut up and go to sleep. We had a couple old coon dogs and a few beagles who were whining and complaining outside too, but Mom said they just didn’t like the smell either.
Anyway, it sounded to me like all the dogs were under the house, and this smell was just horrible. I was sitting in the center of a full size bed, toward the headboard, and the window was on the side wall, about 3 feet from my bed, toward the middle of the bed. I was looking outside, but the light from the kitchen was lighting up my room enough, and the outside was so pitch black dark, that about all I could really see was the window ledge. I must have been looking at this for several minutes, when it hit me - there was something black and kind of furry on the ledge. I was thinking a kitty cat’s tail, because it was moving up and down like a cat will wiggle their tails. My Mom is way-way allergic to cats, I was never allowed to have one, and I loved them dearly - so I wasn’t about to tell her there was a cat in my window! I was hoping it would hop on inside!
Slowly, so I didn’t scare it, I scooted down the bed, trying to get closer. All I could see was this black furry thing moving around. I made it to the edge of my bad, about 4 feet from the window, and was just starting to reach for what I thought was a kitty’s tail. That’s when a hand reached back in toward me!! I’m totally not kidding! LOL Huge furry black hand, and it damn near got me! I screamed bloody murder and flew off my bed to the kitchen. I told my Mom there was a monster in my window, and she went to look. She didn’t see a thing, inside or out. But I was so horrified by the experience I never slept in that room again - ever. For a while it was blown off as a bad dream by my Parents, but within a few months, my Dad started to wonder.
He’d been hearing stories about some creature in those mountains that came down to the valley and stuck close to the creeks. It had supposedly attacked and killed livestock, dogs were terrified of it and wouldn’t track it at all. It made a sound similar to a panther, and it stank REALLY bad, like something dead. Of course, it was Bigfoot they were describing. Did they really have a Bigfoot experience? Did I? I have no clue. I was 3 then, and damn near 40 now - and to this day I know beyond any doubt that something reached into that window for me. It could have been a black bear, their paw could have looked like a hand too in the dark. But if that was a bear - it was the stinkiest bear on the planet.
