Okay guys, this is a post and subject you should all challenge me on because I’m Atheist, and may or may not have my Biblical facts correct! Where I’ve pulled information from scripture, I’ve so noted. But the “Book Of Mormon”, the “Koran”, and probably the Catholic Bible contain some variations of this same scripture.
On Archangels -
Yes, apparently all of these were male. These seem to have been at least 7, called out by name, more were alluded to.
Judaism and Christianity recognize seven archangels: Raphael, Gabriel, Michael, Uriel and three others whose names are uncertain - a source of debate by theologians for centuries. They are thought of to be three from the following list of possible candidates: Raziel, Remiel, Sariel, Metatron, Anael, Raguil, Barakiel, Barbiel, Chamael, Jophiel, Zadkiel, Jeduhiel, Simael, Zaphiel, and Aniel.
The Koran of Islam (Arabic: al-Qur'an) mentions four archangels, naming only Jibraiil (Gabriel, who is said to have revealed the Koran to Muhammad) and Mika'il (Michael) - the other two being Azrael (another form of Raphael, Angel of Death), and Israfel, Angel of Music who plays the flute at the end of the day and will sound the trumpet that wakes the dead on the Day of Judgment.
One post-Talmudic source increases the number to twelve, linking them with the signs of the zodiac, while Kabbalists name, with Metatron named first and then repeated as a tenth.
Some new age angelologists also believe there to be twelve archangels instead of the traditional seven: Anthriel, Aquariel, Chamuel, Gabriel, Jophiel, Michael, Omniel, Perpetiel, Raphael, Uriel, Valeoel, and Zadkiel.
The Book of Enoch (or Henoch) names seven archangels:
Uriel, who rules the world and Tartarus;
Raguel, who takes vengeance on the world of the luminaries;
Michael, who is set over the most part of mankind and over chaos;
Saraquael, who is set over the spirits;
Gabriel, ruler of paradise, the serpents and the cherubim;
Ramiel, whom God set over those who rise; and
Raphael, who rules the spirits of men.
On the “Fallen Angels” -
Here’s where the possible female embodiment might have arisen. Although never referred to as being female - these "fallen angels" are often mentioned in "female form"... so, apparently, they do take a female appearance as one form of their trickery.
Lucifer or Satan commands this legion of angels, most often referred to as demons or fallen angels.
Satan's fall is described in Ezek.28:15-17 (cp. Isa.14:12).
Satan took with him one-third of all angels (Rev.12:4).
Scripture represents some of the angels as evil (Mt.25:41).
In Enoch 69:4-12., there is a list of the names of the fallen angels. This passage is odd because it mentions angels that are not mentioned elsewhere.
Yeqon - "one who misled all the children of the angels, brought them down upon the earth, and perverted them by the daughters of the people"
Asb'el - "one who gave the children of the holy angels an evil counsel and misled them so that they would defile their bodies by the daughters of the people"
Gader'el - "he who showed the children of the people all the blows of death, who misled Eve, who showed the children of the people (how to make) the instruments of death (such as) the shield, the breastplate, and the sword for warfare, and all (the other) instruments of death to the children of the people"
Pinem'e - "demonstrated to the children of the people the bitter and the sweet and revealed to them all the secrets of their wisdom. Furthermore he caused the people to penetrate (the secret of) writing and (the use of) ink and paper"
Kasadya - "he who revealed to the children of the people (the various) flagellations of all evil - (the flagellation) of the souls and the demons, the smashing of the embryo in the womb so that it may be curshed, the flagellation of the soul, snake bites, sunstrokes, the son of the serpent, whose name is Taba'ta"
Names of other fallen angels – 1 Enoch 69:2
Semyaz, Aristaqis, Armen, Kokba'el, Tur'el, Rumyal, Danyul, Neqa'el, Baraqel, Azaz'el, Armaros, Betryal, Basas'el, Hanan'el, Tur'el, Sipwese'el, Yeter'el, Tuma'el, Tur'el, Rum'el, and Azaz'el
Wonder why most angel collectibles and figurines are female?
